Sailfish (Istiophorus) are one of the most sought after gamefish in the blue waters of Key West. We prefer to target these gamesters on light gear. Delph Fishing currently holds the I.G.F.A. world record on 4 kilogram line class for Atlantic Sailfish of 105 pounds caught by Chris Martin. These fish are available year round, however they are the most abundant during the months of April and May where double digit numbers may be taken in a single day.
They are often found in the chum lines around the boats during the winter months while chumming with live pilchards for Blackfin Tunas, Bonito, Wahoo and Kingfish. When sighted, a pilchard may be cast to the fish where it is not uncommon to hook up with double headers.
Sailfish are one of the more acrobatic of the offshore gamefish and certainly one that will thrill any angler that is willing to tangle with this beautiful fish. A quick measurement and photo will allow you to release this beauty and if that is not enough a release mount may be ordered from your favorite taxidermist. The Sailfish is a prize to be remembered all of your life, especially on light tackle.
